The real causes of constant phlegm and mucus in the throat
A little mucus is normal. But if you constantly feel mucus in your throat or repeatedly need to clear it, there may be an underlying cause rather than simply “too much mucus.”
Common causes
-
Postnasal drip — Allergies, colds, or sinus inflammation can cause mucus to drain down the back of your throat.
-
Acid reflux — GERD or “silent reflux” can irritate the throat and cause throat clearing, coughing, hoarseness, or a mucus sensation.
-
Allergies — Pollen, dust mites, mold, and animal dander can increase nasal secretions.
-
Smoking or vaping 🚭 — Irritants can increase mucus production and coughing.
-
Asthma — May cause coughing and mucus, sometimes with wheezing or chest tightness.
-
Respiratory infections — Colds and other infections can temporarily produce more mucus.
-
Dry air and environmental irritants — Dust, pollution, fragrances, and chemical fumes can irritate the airways.
